About Online Poker?

Poker is a card game that several players may play via the internet. Because of this, the number of poker teams worldwide has increased dramatically in recent years. The exact year that the first "online poker" game was played is uncertain; however, several credible sources indicate that it occurred in 1994.

According to today's standards, it may seem like a stretch, but that's precisely what these early games were: poker games played online against other real people.

Formed in the late 1990s as a kind of free internet poker, IRC poker has been present since then. Planet Poker was the first online poker site to offer real money games when it opened its virtual doors in 1998. In a real money poker game, the first hand was dealt with on January 1st, 1998, in Las Vegas.

Author Mike Caro was appointed the "face" of Planet Poker in October 1999, after a nationwide search. A constant aspect of the game is the presence of satellite tournaments, in which the winners gain entry into live poker events.

With one of these events on PokerStars, Chris Moneymaker qualified for the 2003 World Series and earned a seat at the table. It was three times the number of players in the 2004 World Series compared to the previous year's event.

At least four of the World Series of Poker final table players obtained their places via an online poker site. Greg Raymer, the winner of the 2004 tournament, received a seat in the PokerStars online cardroom, much as Moneymaker did.

At the time of the acquisition, Sportingbet, the world's biggest publicly listed online poker firm, announced the purchase of ParadisPoker.com, one of the industry's earliest and largest cardrooms, for an undisclosed sum in October 2004.

For the first time, an online cardroom was bought by a publicly listed company for $340 million, marking the first time this has happened. There have now been many additional card room parent companies that have gone public.

Black Friday occurred in the year 2011, and it is recognized as the notorious year in which the United States Department of Justice seized the domain names of PokerStars and Absolute Poker, thus freezing their respective player bases' bankrolls.
